VANESSA L. SMITH: DELICATE DRIFT

The luscious hand-built ceramic vessels of Illinois sculptor Vanessa Smith are inspired by natural forces, forms, and processes. In particular, she is drawn to weather patterns, coral reef systems, swirling tidal currents, and the ruffled shapes created when water reacts with sandy shores. Smith conveys these fragile and fleeting ecosystems through her surprising constructions, building up undulating waves of milky white clay in a variety of scales.
