WHISPERING WALLS: THE WORK OF LAURA PICKETT CALFEE AND GISELLE HICKS

Whispering Walls
Laura Pickett Calfee, submitted image (detail).

Both Laura Pickett Calfee (TX) and Giselle Hicks (MA) illuminate the significance of the home through their intimate works. Giselle Hicks uses pillow and egg forms, carefully sculpted from porcelain, as symbols of the home and metaphors of fragility and comfort. Pickett Calfee documents the interior spaces of several families who have occupied their homes for more than 50 years. Her subtly-hued photographs place specific objects of the home into small vignettes that illustrate an investment of time and personality that people devote to their homes. Both artists, through unexpected uses of their chosen media, invite the viewer into these personal spaces and ask them to delight in the delicate surfaces, the lyrical patterns and the vulnerable materials that make up the structure of our homes and ourselves. All works in this exhibition are available for purchase.
